Nurse's Notes

Spring 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are rapidly approaching the end of the school year. As you make plans for your summer, remember that a trip to your physician should be on your To Do List. Nebraska State Law directs each school to require evidence of a physical examination by a qualified physician within six (6) months prior to the entrance of a student into seventh (7th) grade.

Every incoming 7th grade student will need to have a booster immunization containing diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and acellular pertussis(Tdap). This immunization is a state requirement and needs to be completed in order to start school this fall. If there are medical or religious reasons for your son/daughter not to receive immunizations, there is a waiver form available upon request.

For 7th and 8th graders who are considering participating in any middle school sport at any time during the 2021/22 school year, a physical exam must be done after May 1st, 2021. Students may not participate in any sport practice or game until the physical form is completed and submitted to the school.

While at your Health Provider’s office, obtain Asthma and/or Anaphylaxis Action Plans if needed. If your student will be taking any prescription medication during the school day or has as needed medications, have your provider give written authorization and directions for administration.

As a reminder, Gretna Public School nurses are no longer dispensing Over the Counter medications, Acetaminophen/Tylenol, Ibuprofen/Motrin, or cough drops, to students at school. If OTC medications are needed they will need to be sent to the school in original packaging with signed permission from the parent/guardian. If the medication will be needed for longer than 2 weeks, a physician must complete a form with authorization to dispense and the purpose for the medication. This includes recurrent headaches, menstrual cramps, and orthodontic adjustment pain.

All physician office electronic forms are accepted. You may also access blank forms on our website under Printable Flyers. Your physician can fax these forms to Aspen Creek Middle School, 402-408-2537 Attn: School Nurse. Or you may email them directly to me. lkanne@gpsne.org

Please call or email me with any questions.

Sincerely,

August 2020

From the Nurse:
I am so excited to be updating my notes with kids still at school after a few
weeks! I can’t see their smiling faces due to the masks as they come through
the halls, but I can hear their happiness in their conversations and laughter
with friends!

I do know, that it is still hard! Worries abound! “Does the student next to me
in class who coughed a couple times have COVID-19?” “Someone at my
lunch table has been gone a few days, but were here earlier this week. Have I
been exposed?” When they voice these concerns, remember to remain calm
and reassuring. Our children will react to both what we say and how we say it.
Remind them that we want to keep our schools open and are protecting them
to the best of our ability. If there was a concern for their safety, we would let
our parents and them know. We all have to be the role models for our kids.
Children are intensely watching our actions even more than our words. If
they do ask you, provide information that is honest, accurate, and age
appropriate.

If you have a concern about your child’s health, please call or email me at
school. I am here every day. If your child has a concern, encourage them to
come see me or one of the counselors to talk about it!

Take good care, be well, we are in this together!
